Thousands of Peru fans have made the trip to Buenos Aires to support their team in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Argentina. With just two games left in Conmebol qualification Peru sit fourth in the group, in an automatic qualification place.
They are level with Argentina on 24 points, who are sitting in fifth and could face a play-off if they stick there. However, the group is extremely tight and only Brazil have already qualified. Second-placed Uruguay only have 27 points and Colombia have 26.
However, sixth-place Chile (23), Paraguay (21) and Ecuador (20) all have a chance of qualifying if results go in their favour during these two matches. Lionel Messi and Co host Peru and travel to Ecuador next Tuesday knowing they must get two positive results – or miss out on qualification altogether. Peru – managed by former Argentina international Ricardo Gareca – are chasing a first appearance at the World Cup since 1982.
