Plateau United FC of Jos have been crowned the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, their first-ever win, after amassing 66 points from 38 matches.
The Kennedy Boboye tutored side won the league on Saturday in Jos after beating defending champions Enugu Rangers International 2-0 on the last day, to clinch the coveted trophy and cash of N50million.
It is understood that the 2017 championship went down to the wire between Plateau United and Lagos based MFM FC, with just one point separating them going to Day 38.
But while Plateau United earned the maximum three points to hit 66 points, MFM faded out, losing to El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri 1-2 and ending the race with 62 points.
Enyimba International came third with 61 points and Akwa United fourth with 60 points.
The Jos based team will now represent Nigeria in next year’s CAF Champions League along with runners-up MFM FC, who lost 2-1 at El Kanemi Warriors, while Shooting Stars, ABS FC, Gombe United and Remo Stars have been relegated from the NPFL.
